Professional chefs are veritable experts when it comes to curating a menu or whipping up a gourmet meal, but what about what they cook when they grow tired of cooking? Between appeasing a diverse customer palette to chopping, whipping, and sautéing all day long, it makes sense that professional cooks would need to take a well-deserved break from the kitchen every once in a while.
As it turns out, there is a go-to no-cook dish among the chef community: homemade popcorn. took it upon herself to poll three different chefs, culinary instructors, and nutritionists regarding their favorite no-cook meals, and the response was unanimous. Not only is popcorn a low-calorie splurge snack (especially without all the added butter and salt), but it’s also a filling meal that requires less than 10 minutes of prep.
“I see no difference between eating a bowl of good popcorn and eating a bowl of pasta for dinner, and the popcorn is full of fiber, unlike the pasta,” chef and culinary instructor Erica Wides told Today. Tina Ruggiero, author of , agreed, making a point to emphasize the difference between stovetop or and microwave popcorn. “By making popcorn from scratch, you avoid the chemicals, synthetic butters, and epic amounts of sodium found in many packaged varieties,” explains Ruggiero. She suggests adding a touch of melted butter, some finely chopped rosemary, a dash of garlic powder, a sprinkle of kosher salt, and a touch of Parmigiano-Reggiano to your stovetop or air-popped corn for a tasty, nutritious snack.
