A fine arts graduate of Carnegie Mellon University, interior designer 's first passion was painting. "When I came out of school, it was almost impossible for a single woman to make a living as an artist," she says. "Moms really do know best, and mine smartly suggested that I explore interior design." Soon, she was applying her eye for paint palettes to colorful and clean interiors with old-meets-new arrangements of furniture and décor. Today, Angus is one of San Francisco's premier designers.
Angus has designed homes for the likes of Ralph Lauren and the Lauder family and created interiors for swank stores like Saks Fifth Avenue and Lane Crawford in Hong Kong. Her work has been featured in ELLE Decor
, House Beautiful
, California Home + Design
, the Kips Bay Show House in New York City, and the San Francisco Decorator Showcase.
After getting her BFA, Angus became an assistant to an interior designer in Philadelphia, where she learned tried-and-true tricks of the trade. Beckoned by the opportunity and electric vibe of New York City (she admits to attending the opening night of Studio 54), she relocated and worked with the likes of Sotheby's Restoration, Saks Fifth Avenue, and Naomi Leff and Associates. In the late '90s, she launched her own design firm on the West Coast, after her former husband's career required them to relocate to San Francisco.
Neo-Classical and clean modern. Interiors that stand the test of time but also have a sense of color and dynamism to them. Lucite, lacquer, colorful lava stone, and Parsons-style furniture.
Her vibrant and always-on-point art selections and her livable, family-friendly environments.
"I love making my own art. I adore painting (it's really my first passion), and I've also recently explored working with plexiglass and print-making. I'm a graduate of the annual print-making seminar at , the mecca of printing houses here in San Francisco. A must for me is also my annual pilgrimage to ; it's a mind-blowing experience each and every time I go."
Current projects include a complete gut-job remodel on a classic San Francisco home: "Among other things, we're adding a third-floor penthouse to include a fabulous master suite and a spa for her." The ultimate family retreat in the hills of Sonoma is also underway: "This place is perched high enough that one can actually see San Francisco from the property." And then there's an Art Deco remodel. "Each project is insanely different and brings unique creative challenges," she says.
"Contemporary arts are experiencing a renaissance that we haven't seen since the '50s and '60s. It's positively electrifying to see these artists getting the recognition they deserve. I also adore the fact that I get to experience Leo Villareal's Bay Bridge light installation every night from my downtown San Francisco apartment. What a way to end the day!"
