How would you go about throwing a picture-perfect brunch for the hottest names in fashion? One woman has perfected the art—all in effortlessly chic fashion. Yes, is a force to be reckoned with when simply stunning tablescapes and wildflower arrangements are concerned.
To celebrate the launch of her new , the fashion designer threw a jaw-dropping summer brunch for Los Angeles' fashion elite. To bring the vision to life, she called on the help of two trusted friends with impeccable taste: Marlien Rentmeester of and stylist , who graciously offered her Silver Lake home for the party's backdrop. Get ready to take notes—we chatted with the designer who shared her best entertaining tips with us.
"We wanted to create a really natural, rustic tablescape," Kayne says of the brunch's idyllic setting. Just like her latest collection, the lines were simple, the fabrics of the highest quality, and the embellishments tasteful. "The floral arrangements brought the whole thing to life."
"Even though it was warm outside, we wanted to make the table feel a little bit like fall to tie in with the collection," shares the designer. "Heather from Twig & Twine used a mix of flowers, foliage, and fruit to give it that fall feel: orange and peach ranunculus, Queen Anne’s lace, millet, peony foliage, scabiosa flowers, and figs among other things." The reddening tones and deep plum leaves provided contrast to the soft, summery white peonies at the center.
As far as centerpieces go, Kayne doesn't believe in keeping it contained to the vases. "I loved the addition of the vine, pears, and lychées on the table," she says. "It helped bridge the gap between each arrangement and made the table feel lush and gorgeous."
On the table, only the finest tablewares allowed—but all in minimal fashion: "The linens were from Hale Mercantile Co and we used Plates, cups, and cutlery for the place settings, which are some of my favorite Jenni Kayne is carrying this season," the designer says.
When asked to share her best entertaining tips, Kayne straight away pointed to the importance of flowers: "In terms of décor, I always use flowers or greens to add life to a table," she says. "This one step makes such a difference."
For the menu, Kayne called on the help of L.A.–based catering company to put together a delicious family-style meal that was hearty but also light and healthful. "They served their signature vegan "Kabbouleh" salad, Koda Farm brown rice with dill and Barbari bread, baked white fish with turmeric, and grilled broccolini with chili chimichurri," she shares.
The real pièce de résistance was the cake—an amazing gluten and dairy-free hazelnut torte with juicy Blenheim apricots, simply arranged with fresh apricots and lavender sprigs.
"It was a hot summer day, which makes hosting an outdoor lunch tricky," says Kayne. "To keep things cool, we rented big canvas umbrellas for additional shade." In fact, the comfort of her guests was a top priority for the designer.
"You also want to make them feel at home," Kayne says of her guests. "Encourage them to take off their shoes and help them sort out a drink so they feel comfortable as soon as they arrive." Marlien Rentmeester, pictured above, looked radiantly at ease under the shade of her umbrella.
As for her last entertaining tip: always prepare as much in advance as possible. "It always helps to be organized and prepared before an event so you can relax once your guests arrive," she says.
"Fresh seasonal flowers, fun music, and friends, both old and new, coming together to share a beautiful meal outdoors is my ultimate way to entertain at home," shares Jessica de Ruiter, who opened her home for the party. By the look on these women's faces, we can only guess the three friends were successful in attending to every last detail to meet their guests' needs.
