When it comes to work and fashion, it's common to hear the phrase, "Dress for the job you want, not the job you have." And while that may be true, even in the age of sweatshirts and C-suites, it's harder to gauge how that adage can be reflected in jewelry. "Jewelry is a great way to express personality and style," celebrity stylist Caley Rinker says. "However, depending on the office environment, there are some rules to follow."

What Works:

Jewelry should enhance, not detract, from your clothing. "Jewelry at a workplace shouldn't be too distracting," she says. "It should complement your outfit."

Less is more. "If you choose a statement piece, pick just one," Rinker notes. "For example, you can pair a big statement earring with a basic top—just make sure that the rest of your outfit is simple."

Invest in timeless pieces. "When is doubt, stick to the classics," she adds. "You can never go wrong with a classic hoop or bangle."

Choose jewelry you can wear every day. "I love pieces you can wear daily and don't have to take off. They can be trendy without being boring," Rinker says.

What Doesn't:

Extremely big earrings. "Earrings that are too colorful or large can be distracting, and painful to wear all day," she says.

Gaudy cocktail rings. "Big rings can get in the way of doing work well and can sometimes discredit your professionalism," Rinker adds.

Oversized bangles. "Bracelets that are too oversized and layered can be noisy and look tacky," she says. "Stick to layering classic bracelets or one statement bangle that isn't too much."
