Aimee Song's rise to fashion blogger stardom is a lesson in what you can accomplish by following your passions. The fashion guru behind got her start working as a receptionist at a construction company right out of high school while saving up money to pay her own college tuition. It was there that she got her first taste for architecture and design and decided to go to school at the Academy of Art in San Francisco. However, one job interview changed everything. "I got the job because of my outfit," she tells Hillary Kerr on Episode 43 of Second Life.
Song had just started posting interior design photos on a brand-new blog when she went in for a job interview at the San Francisco Design Center. Her unique outfit sparked a conversation with the VP of the organization, and she got the job immediately. Excited to share the big news, she snapped a photo of herself in the look and posted it online. It only took about a week for her to realize her few followers were far more interested in her outfit photos than her design shots.
Countless side gigs and night classes later, Song found herself at the helm of one of the first wildly successful fashion blogs. However, the more recognition she garnered, the harder it became to stay true to herself in the world of perfect Instagram photos and chasing likes. "Everybody's lives looked perfect," she explains. "And then I'm like, Oh my god, I'm so miserable. I'm pretending to be happy, but I'm not happy." She soon realized she had to adjust her focus. "Is getting likes important? Or is being a real person, a human being, being vulnerable, is that more important?"
Now Song is prioritizing self-care and new projects that make her truly excited. Since starting a small blog to organize beautiful images that she loved, she's published two books, traveled the world, and has her very own clothing line in the works. "I want to change the world. I want people to really care more," Song says. "My vessel through that is fashion, and blogging, and Instagram."
