He’s the man who has built an empire on his impeccable taste and incomparable fashion, so when Tim Gunn , we were intrigued. Would his interior style live up to the Project Runway host and Parsons dean’s reputation? The answer: yes. But using one word to describe Gunn’s elegant, thoughtfully-styled home would do it a disservice.
The Upper West Side apartment is a classic decorator’s dream. The walls glow a warm and welcoming hue (, to be exact) and each object has been chosen and styled with careful consideration. “These things mean something to me,” Gunn says of the family heirlooms and collection of traditional décor in his home. “I love history and objects with a story to tell.” Peek inside Tim Gunn's elegant New York city apartment for some of the stories behind the items in his carefully curated home.
“Certainly, I’m a classicist. I crave good proportions and subscribe to the golden mean,” Gunn says, who did not enlist an interior designer for the project.
Gunn says creating the apartment took time, but he relished the challenge. “I’m very slow and plodding when it comes to furniture arranging and hanging paintings,” he says. “But when it comes to color, there’s no hesitation.”
An architectural model by Timothy Richards sits in the center of the table, providing a unique point of interest. Gunn collects the models, and this one is a miniature English estate house.
The guest bedroom features a rich, persimmon bench, layered with an antique rug and Pottery Barn bed.
When it came to designing the terrace, Gunn admits he was unsure how to proceed, so enlisted the help of landscape designer Antonio Parrotta. “When you go in someone’s home, you can feel what he wants outside,” says Parrotta. “I knew Tim really wanted a European feel, layered little niches that make you feel like you’re in a garden in Paris or Rome.”
